I Like Suds

Yes, I am a Pinterest addict. And I have conquered another “project” that I discovered on the site. This time I got my hands dirty. Making this more out of my curiosity, I made Homemade Laundry Detergent. I had seen many women pin the recipe to their boards and really raved about the cost saving, long lasting product. So, I pinned and made it!

I used the recipe from this girls site. I like her recipe because she added the Oxi-Clean, which is used to get rid of stains. And well, with 3 boys, I need all the stain remover there is!

The ingredients are simple and at reasonable prices. Here is what I used;

  • Borax
  • Arm & Hammer super washing soda
  • Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
  • 3-bars Fels Naphtha Soap
  • 2-small containers Oxi-Clean
  • 1-bar Ivory soap for kicks and giggles

Everything is in the laundry aisle. Except the Ivory soap which is in the Health and Beauty section. I bought everything at Wal-Mart, except the Oxi-Clean, I got that at Big Lots, because it was cheaper there.

So, I then grated the soaps into a 5 gallon bucket that I got at Home Depot, which was lined with a garbage bag.

And it looks like cheese! Be careful when you get down to the nitty gritty of the soap, you may grate the skin off of your thumb.

Mix all ingredients together and stir it up pretty good. This made about 2 1/2 gallons.

My thoughts and opinion on the detergent. It’s not sudsy, really, not at all. There is a scent, but, it doesn’t keep. But, it does get your laundry clean….even gets the stains out! I’m on the fence about it. I like it, but, I do like the sudsy, fresh spring mountain rain scent on my laundry. I spent a good $17 on all of the ingredients. However, since the husband is Mr. Super-Saver-Coupon-Savvy, he gets us stocked up on detergent pretty cheap and sometimes free!

I will use up the homemade detergent, however, I don’t think I’ll make it again. I like my suds.

Only A Vapor

My heart is heavy today. Last week there was a horrible accident in our town and a man and a 10-year-old girl lost their lives in the accident. Today was the funeral for the girl. I don’t know this family, I know people who do know this family. I have never lost a child, but, I’ve lost enough loved ones, that I can empathize the emotional pain that they are feeling.

I hurt for the little girls’ friends. When I was 11, my very good friend died in a drowning accident. I talked to her for the last time on that hot August morning. She had invited me to go swimming with her, but, I already had plans to go to the Fair with my dad. I remember her funeral. I remember the tears streaming down her parents’ and siblings faces. I remember her dad hugging me ever so tightly and saying, “You were such a good friend to Liz.”

This little girl’s friends’ will never forget her.

My heart aches for the mom. My daughter is the same age as hers that she lost. It’s absolutely heart wrenching.

I always try to keep the mindset to live each day the best that you can. Love on your loved ones. We are not promised tomorrow.

“Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” James 4:14

Moving Forward

Well, color me surprised! I remembered my password so I can open up this blog. It has been awhile since I last wrote. I keep going back and forth about dedicating some time to blogging. So, maybe by writing on the first day of 2012, this will motivate me.

The last few months of 2011 have kind of left me bitter, angry and just not very happy with certain events that had taken place in my life. And really, its my fault, because I let certain people and things get to me. I don’t want to live with such a hardened heart.

I read this verse this morning and I’m going to stick with it!

“Do not remember the past events, pay no attention to things of old. Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it?” Isaiah 43:18-19a.

So, with that, Happy New Year!
