Play Ball!

Hey all my Nashville friends! For the past 3 years, jester 1 has been a part of a FREE baseball clinic hosted by the Nashville Sounds. Where he learns about catching, batting, throwing and other baseball must-knows. It’s a fun, inspiring and active day  for all who participate.

It is for boys and girls between the ages of 6-14.

There are two days that you can choose to attend.

June 15 and June 16. The clinic will run from 9:00-12:00. With a snack provided at the end. In previous years, you are also given tickets to that evenings baseball game!

To register, go to the Chevy Youth Sports website.

  • choose Nashville as your market
  • enter playbill for the password

Spaces are running out, so sign your boy or girl up now!

If you are in another city, look under the market listings and see if your city is participating in hosting a free baseball clinic as well!

Not So Cool Mom

The hype of superheroes play a big part in our household. The DC  and the Marvel family. But, ever since The Avengers came out onto the big screen, I’ve seen Iron Man, Hulk and the others fight throughout my house.

For a while now, the 3 jesters have been watching the cartoon of The Avengers. I’ve sat with them and watched a couple of episodes. So, I got the bright idea of taking the boys to a comic book store and they can pick out a comic of their choice of superhero. I remember when I was about their age, I would ride my bike down to our little convenient store and get a few comic books myself.

Last week I brought them to our local comic book store. As we walked in, there were two grown men playing or trading with some kind of cards. I couldn’t tell what kind they were, but, my first thought was, “Wow. I’m not so sure about this.” Because my mind fast forwarded to 30 years and frankly, I don’t want to see the 3 jesters sitting in a comic book store trading cards. As we made our way through the tight, boxes of comics piled throughout every side of the store, we found a bunch of comics in boxes marked $1. I had the boys look through them. After much deciding and contemplating on which one to get,we walked out with Hulk, Spiderman and Iron Man.

When we got to the car, they were allowed to open them and start looking through the books. That’s when I heard, “Ooooooo! Look at her!” Instantly, I asked told them to pass the comic books back up to me. My brother-in-law was with us and I had him look through the comics. And sure enough there were pictures of women characters drawn to where little boys eyes should not see. There was even a picture of an old man in the shower with his naked bottom exposed!

I felt horrible. Ashamed. Like I needed to chalk up another failing parent moment. I should have looked through the comics before allowing the boys to get them. I honestly didn’t think the comics would be so exposed. All I had in mind was the cool superheroes that they love to watch.

I explained to the boys that “mommy messed up” and that they are not ready, not old enough to start collecting comics. I’m so glad that they understood and didn’t complain too much about not having the comics anymore.

Here I was, thinking something that is so cool, fun and everybody’s doing it attitude, only to be left feeling guilty.

Surely I’m not the only mom out there who has made a not-so-cool-mom move like this. It’s a learning experience for us all, right!?

Operation Summer Happenings

School is out and summer break is in full swing at our house. But, I’m not letting the princess and 3 jesters off the summer hook that easy. I have a couple of “school” directed activities for them to take part in. One of them is to sign them up for a summer reading program. There are 2 that I would like for them to be a part of.

  • Barnes and Noble has a great one for kids. They need to read 8 books of their choice, once finished they can choose a free book that is listed on the B&N book list.
  • Our local library has 3 programs to be a part of. Each one for kids, teens and adults. The kids record the books they have read on an activity log and they will receive prizes once turned in. Teens have the chance to win a NOOK e-reader. Adults have to write-up a short review of the book they read and will be entered to win a prize.

I plan on carving out 30 minutes each day for them to read.

I bought the princess and 3 jesters a composition book for them to use as journals. They will have free writing time, where they can write whatever they want. Other days I will give them a topic for them to write about. I will also give them a scripture verse and they will have to write what it means to them. They can also use the journal to draw a picture of whatever they choose. We will have 30 minutes of journaling time each day as well.

We have other summer happenings planned which includes, snow cones, sprinklers, picnics, park time, sidewalk chalk, swimming, etc. (hopefully we will dismiss an ER visit this summer!)  We also have a long drive to Colorado in July planned, I will write more about that another time.

What fun-filled activities do you have planned for this summer?

Meal Plan – April 23-27

Not that I’ve been forgetting to post a meal plan weekly, its just that I haven’t really been making one! With 2 weeks off for Spring Break, I admit, I got a little lazy with making meals for my family. Don’t worry, they still ate!

Monday: Chicken and Noodles with Vegetables. Simple. Crock-pot. That is all.

Tuesday: Enchiladas. I’ve made another kind of her enchiladas before and they were delicious! So, these should be to!

Wednesday: Eat at church night!

Thursday: This is a meal that you need to wear your elastic waist pants to the dinner table! Salisbury steak with comforting sides of mashed potatoes and peas.

Friday: It’s the start of the weekend. You’ve worked hard all week. Let’s simplify with the love and ease of homemade pizza, heck, let’s make it a Deep Dish pizza!

There you go my friends. Enjoy!

What’s on your dinner table this week?

Meal Plan – March 12-16

This comic made me laugh! Sometimes I want to charge the princess and 3 jesters for what they don’t eat or don’t finish eating! But, with this weeks’ meal plan, they might just eat what I make every night!

Monday: Penne chicken with veggies. Using zucchini and broccoli as the veggies and a sprinkle or two of Parmesan cheese on top. Simple.

Tuesday: Homemade pizza. I’m going to try Emeril’s basic pizza dough. I have never made pizza dough before, and this recipe looked real basic and simple!

Wednesday: Eat at church night!

Thursday: Tacos. We need something real quick. The princess has a Chorus concert!

Friday: Creamy Chicken TaquitosI’ve always wanted to make taquitos and these look yummy!

What’s on your meal plan this week?

Meal Plan: March 5-9

It’s been eons since I last posted a meal plan on here, actually any kind of post. There are various reasons that I can give you, but, let’s just cut to the chase and tell you what our dinner plans are for this week!

Monday: Baked Ravioli. This dish looks so easy and delicious, plus ravioli is one of my favorites!

Tuesday: Good ole’ Roast with potatoes and carrots simmering in a crock-pot all day….need I say more?

Wednesday: Eat at church night! Yay! A night off!

Thursday: Poppy Seed Chicken Pitas This is a quick, simple dinner to put together. Toss a fruit salad together and you have a well-rounded, balanced meal.

Friday: Sesame Chicken I’ve been kind of on a “Martha” kick, and since my kids love this type of Chinese food, this recipe looked like one they would enjoy made at home.

I hope these meals can be useful to you and your family! If you have a meal plan for this week, I would love to hear what you are cooking up in your kitchen for your family!
